WAYNE, N.J. –
Stephen DeBellis hit his second homer of the season and drove in three runs, but the Widener University baseball team dropped a 10-8 slugfest to William Paterson on Sunday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Nick D'Alessandro enjoyed a multi-hit day with a pair of singles.
- Brandon Reis reached base all five times he came to the plate with a hit, three walks, and was hit by a pitch. He also scored three runs.
- Bryce Fremgen and Matt Samson each drove in a run for the Pride.
- Jake Good authored a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
- The Pride displayed some patience at the plate, working five walks in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Pioneers scored the first run of the game in the second inning, Samson reached on a two-out error, followed by a walk to Reis. On a double steal, the catcher's throw went into leftfield, allowing Samson to scamper home to tie the game.
- WP took the lead back with two runs in the fourth, but battling in the next half inning with Samson on second via a fielder's choice and Reis on first following a base on balls, DeBellis cracked his long ball out to left, putting the Blue and Gold on top 4-3.
- With the score tied at 4-4 heading to the top of the sixth, Widener took the lead back as D'Alessandro and Greg Elfreth singled to open the frame. Fremgen smacked a single through the right side to plate D'Alessandro. A single from Brennan Taylor loaded the bases for Samson who delivered a sac fly to plate Elfreth, making it 6-4.
- Once again tied, this time at 6-6 in the seventh, Widener scored without the benefit of a hit as Reis and Dylan Morrissette were each hit by a pitch. A fly out moved Reis to third where he stood when a passed ball got by the catcher, allowing Reis to dash home, putting the Pride up 7-6.
- The Pioneers came back to take a 10-7 lead in the seventh and eighth. WU continued to fight to the final out as in the ninth, Reis walked to open the frame and was moved to second on a sacrifice. With two outs, it looked like a ground ball would end the game, but a throwing error on the second baseman put D'Alessandro on and brought Reis home.
