CHESTER, Pa. – 10 different players scored for the Widener University men's basketball team, four in double figures, as the Pride opened its home slate with a 78-51 win against Bryn Athyn at the Widener University Tip-Off Tournament for Autism Awareness, sponsored by Dilworth Paxson.
Widener pushed the pace from the tip, using an opening 11-2 run in the first four minutes of the game. A brief push by the Lions pulled the score to 11-6, but the Blue and Gold then scored 10 in a row, closing the opening frame on a 39-9 run, taking 50-15 lead into halftime. The second half was played at a slower pace with a lot of whistles as the teams combined to take 34 free throws in the final 20 minutes.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Pat Holden and A.J. Sawyers led the Blue and Gold with 14 points apiece, each connecting on 2-of-3 shots from beyond the arc.
- Connor Laverty and Kolbey Woodard both posted 10 in the game.
- Jared Peters scored nine and added a team-high tying four assists.
- Deshawn Jones netted eight including a pair of back-to-back thunderous dunks.
- Steven Matlack made his presence felt with a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.
- Widener shot a blistering 61.3 percent (19-for-31) in the first half.
