Scouting Report
Hailing from the Colonial States Athletic Conference, Bryn Athyn comes into Friday's contest at 0-0. The Lions faced off against Division I Towson on November 8 in an exhibition. They fell to the Tigers 31-100. Bryn Thyn graduated its three top scorers from a year ago, all of whom averaged over 15 points per contest. Tariq Moore is the teams best returning offensive weapon. He dropped seven against Towson, keeping pace with 7.3 average a season ago.
Justin Baxter was selected as the first-ever head coach of the Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team in 2012. As he heads into his seventh season as the Lions' head coach in 2019-20, Baxter has built a program from scratch into one that is starting to make noise in the Division III landscape.
Moravian comes into the tournament at 1-1, recently defeating the College of Mount St. Vincent 79-71. Three players finished in double figures with junior guard Matt O'Connor leading the way. He put up 21 in the season-opening loss to Muhlenburg. C.J. Branes provides the spark off the bench for the Greyhounds. The senior is the team's top scorer, averaging 18.5 ppg on 54.5 percent shooting. He had 23 against the College of Mount St. Vincent. He is also the team's leading rebounder, grabbing boards at 6.5 clip.
Shawn Postiglione was named the new Head Men's Basketball Coach on Septmeber 16, 2019.
Postiglione comes to Bethlehem after four years as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Bridgewater (Va.) College where he led the Eagles to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament in each season. In 2014-15, Postiglione was an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College when the squad reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament, and he served as an assistant coach at Christopher Newport University for four years where he helped the Captains to a pair of NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
Kean eneters the tournament at 0-1, falling to Neumann 89-75 in the first game of 2019. The Wildcats lost their 2018-19 leading scorer in Micah Kerr. This year, the offense relies heavily on sophomore point guard Jailen Jameson. The Bronx, N.Y. native put 12.0 ppg last year in addition to being the team leader in assists and second in rebounds. In game one he dropped 18 points to go along with five boards.
Mario Gunn is freshman for the Wildcats who showed out in his first collegiate game. The 6'5" forward had 17 points, two assists, and six rebounds. Three other players finished in double figures, rounding out the balance attack.
Tdam Hutchinson returns to the sidelines for his second season in 2019-20. In his first season, Hutchinson collected seven wins, including a season sweep of TCNJ and the first home victory over Ramapo since 2013-14. Kean had two Cougars selected to the All-NJAC, including Micah Kerr with a second team selection and Jalien Jamison being named the NJAC Rookie of the Year.
Run It Back
Widener made it to the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in 2018-19, being led primarily by seniors
Tyler Drews and
Ryan McMahon. The two have since moved on but the Pride is returning three of its four top-scorers in
Connor Laverty,
Elijah Boyd, and
Jared Peters. Peters and Laverty both shot above 36 percent from three and Boyd was second on the team in assists. Look for him to improve on his passing this year as WU looks to replace McMahon's facilitating abilities.
New Faces
There are eight new members on the Widener men's basketball team in 2019-20. Six of whom are freshman, one who is a sophomore and one senior.
Deshawn Jones,
Steven Matlack, and
Drew Hickson look to bolster a front court that lost 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in
Jalen Howard.
Bo Furey-Bastian,
Will Long,
Nkem Ota,
Anthony Alston Jr., and
James Gillespie aim to provide shooting and front court defense in conference full of excellent guard play.
200 Watch!
With a record of 196-149 at Widener, Head Coach
Chris Carideo looks to eclipse to 200-mark in wins this season.
