OWINGS MILLS, Md. –
Sean McGaughey eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark for career passing, as the Widener University football team fell to the Stevenson Mustangs 36-10 on Saturday afternoon.
After a couple missed opportunities early for the Pride, Stevenson scored the first points of the game with a touchdown in opening minutes of the second quarter. Widener got on the board with 10:53 left in the first half on a 32-yard field goal by
Trevor Mavromihalis, cutting the lead to 7-3. After initially appearing to stop the Mustangs on the ensuing drive, a penalty gave SU new life. Stevenson cashed in with a score to make it 13-3 at the break.
After receiving the opening kickoff in the second half, the Mustangs drove to the Widener five before fumbling.
Ryan Beck recovered the ball on the ground, giving the Pride possession. The Blue and Gold started driving, but a tipped pass was intercepted and returned for a score, extending the Stevenson lead to 20-3. Trailing early in the fourth quarter, Widener pulled closer on a five-yard touchdown run by
Chris Randle, making it 26-10.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sean McGaughey threw for 264 yards for the Pride, completing passes to six different receivers.
- The primary targets on the day were James Gillespie and Zack Vanscovich, pulling in seven and five balls respectively. Gillespie went for 147 yards, pushing his season total to 764.
- Vanscovich hauled in 74 yards, representing a career-high.
- Tahir Cruse led Widener in rushing, tying his career-high with 73 yards on 11 carries.
- Leading the defense was Mario Scotese, who filled the stat sheet with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick.
OF NOTE
- With a 32-yard pass to Gillespie in the third quarter, McGaughey became the sixth player in Widener history to pass for more than 5,000 yards. He sits at 5,149 in his career, 218 away from tying Mike Warker for fifth place in the Pride record books.
- Gillespie has now caught a pass in 19 consecutive regular season games.
- Chris Randle rushed for his seventh touchdown of the year and has found the end zone in all five games this season.
