MOVIN' ON!! @WidenerBaseball Downs Top Seed Alvernia Behind DeBellis Monster Day

YORK, Pa.Stephen DeBellis hit three home runs, including a grand slam, driving in nine as the Widener University baseball team advanced in the MAC Commonwealth Championship with a 17-4 win against the top-seeded Alvernia Golden Wolves on Thursday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • DeBellis had a career day, going 4-for-5, clubbing his fourth, fifth, and sixth long balls of the year, driving in nine to lead the Widener attack.
  • Dylan Morrissette and Matthew Guarino each had two hits on the afternoon.
  • Greg Elfreth had a single, extending his hitting streak to seven games. He also scored a pair of runs.
  • Josh Lafferty pitched seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride took command of the game early, scoring eight times in the second inning. DeBellis led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a groundout before coming on a single from Guarino to open the scoring. After a groundout that advanced Guarino, three straight singles from Brennan Taylor, Greg Elfreth, and Mike Garofolo tallied a trio of runs to extend the edge to 4-0.
  • Not done yet, Nick D'Alessandro was hit by a pitch and Glenn Seymour walked to load the bases and bring DeBellis up again. The shortstop promptly unloaded the bases with a grand slam down the rightfield line, pushing the lead to 8-0.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the second, the Blue and Gold picked up where they left off, crossing the plate five more times in the third, keyed by RBI hits from Seymour, Morrissette, and Guarino.
  • The Golden Wolves cut into the lead, scoring four times in the sixth with three of the runs unearned, but Lafferty righted the ship to throw a scoreless seventh and end his evening.
  • Widener posted another run in the eighth when DeBellis cracked his second homer of the contest. The junior capped his monster day when he drilled his third big fly of the game, a three-run shot in the ninth to cap the scoring.
