@WidenerBaseball Season Closes With Heartbreaking Loss in MAC Commonwealth Championship

YORK, Pa. - The Widener University baseball team rallied from deficits in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Pride saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, falling 13-12 in 10 innings to the Hood Blazers in the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Friday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener posted a first inning run thanks to a defensive miscue from the Blazers. With two out, Nick D'Alessandro grounded a ball to third that should have ended the inning, but the throw got past the first baseman, allowing D'Alessandro to reach second. That opened the door for Seymour to draw a four pitch walk in front of DeBellis who knocked in his 10th run of the championship with a single and a 1-0 lead for the Pride.
  • In the second with Liero on second and Brennan Taylor on first following a double and a walk, Greg Elfreth hit a two-bagger into right-center to score another run, making it 2-0.
  • The lead doubled in the fifth as D'Alessandro and Seymour singled to open the inning and were sacrificed up a base each before Morrissette singles down the left field line to score both runners.
  • In the sixth, Liero led off with his second double of the game, moved to third on a groundout, and came across the plate on a grounder by Elfreth.
  • Hood got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the edge to 5-3.
  • Widener seemed to take command back in the seventh, scoring four runs. With runners on second and third, Morrissette lifted a sac fly to center that was misplayed by the outfielder, enabling Seymour to score. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners for pinch-hitter Addvensky who doubled into left, scoring both runners. Taylor followed with a double of his own, plating Addvensky, making it 9-3.
  • The Blazers battled back in a big way, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-9 edge.
  • Undaunted, Mike Garofolo was hit by a pitch to open the eighth and moved to second on a bunt. Seymour singled to move the runner to third before Garofolo came in to score on a fielder's choice, tying the game at 10-10. Hood scored again in the bottom of the frame to take a 11-10 lead.
  • Opening the ninth, Guarino doubled and was subsequently pinch-run for by Ricky Collings. Addvensky followed with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners for Brennan Taylor who singled into left, scoring Collings with the tying run and move Addvensky to third. Elfreth came up next and reached on a fielder's choice, bringing Addvensky across, pushing WU back on top 12-11.
  • The Blazers posted a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. After a Widener scoring opportunity came up empty in the top of the 10th, Hood scored in the bottom of the inning.
