GRANTHAM, Pa. –
Josh Lafferty pitched a complete game as the Widener University baseball team split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with the Messiah Falcons, winning the second game 7-3 after dropping the opener 6-4.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lafferty allowed just five hits and two earned runs, striking out four in the game two win.
- Tommy Scharnikow had three hits on the day with an RBI.
- Nick D'Alessandro posted a hit in each game of the twinbill and drove in four runs for the afternoon.
- Dylan Morrissette also had a hit in each of the games.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Messiah 6, Widener 4)
- In a complete reversal from the previous day, the Falcons jumped on the board with five runs in the first and one in the second, taking an early 6-0 lead.
- The Pride got on the board in the third as Morrissette, Brennan Taylor, and Dylan Peiffer each singled to open the inning. An RBI single from Nick D'Alessandro plated Morrissette and Taylor. Another run came across when Stephen DeBellis reached on an error to plate Peiffer. Not done, DeBellis stole second with the throw going into centerfield, allowing D'Alessandro to come home from third, chopping the lead to 6-4.
- From that point, the bats went silent as neither team scored the remainder of the game.
- Out of the bullpen, Joseph Luscko authored 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Widener 7, Messiah 3)
- Widener got on the board first with a pair of opening inning runs. Greg Elfreth and D'Alessandro opened the game with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run. Three batters later, an error by the Falcons allowed D'Alessandro to score, giving WU a 2-0 lead.
- The Blue and Gold added a run in the third as a double from DeBellis was followed by walks to Morrissette and Chandler Liero to load the bases before a groundout brought DeBellis in to score. Messiah got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the advantage to 3-1.
- Widener pushed across an insurance run in the sixth as Tommy Scharnikow led off with a double before an Elfreth sac bunt moved him to third and a safety squeeze from D'Alessandro brought him home.
- The run proved important as the Falcons got two in the bottom of the frame.
- The Pride tacked on a score in the seventh as Mike Garofalo singled to score Chandler Liero who singled and moved to second a batter earlier. Two more runs came in later in the inning on a sac fly by Taylor and an RBI single from Scharnikow.
- Scharnikow led the offense with three hits including a double and a triple, driving in a run.
