Bats Break Out for @WidenerBaseball in Win Against Messiah

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team broke out the bats in a big way, recording season-highs in runs and hits as the Pride downed the Messiah Falcons 14-7 in a MAC Commonwealth battle on Friday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Five different Widener players had three hits in the contest as Greg Elfreth, Matthew Guarino, Nick D'Alessandro, Dylan Morrissette, and Brennan Taylor each had a trio of base knocks.
  • Taylor led the Pride with three RBI. D'Alessandro, Morrisette, Garofalo, and Chandler Liero drove in two apiece.
  • The Blue and Gold posted season-highs in runs (14), hits (18), and doubles (6).
  • 14 runs are the most for the Pride since scoring 20 against Scranton on February 26, 2017. The 18 hits are the highest total since recording the same number against Kenyon on March 5, 2017.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. A bases loaded walk by Glenn Seymour forced in Greg Elfreth who led off with a single. Matthew Guarino followed with an RBI hit before back-to-back sac flies from Chandler Liero and Mike Garofalo made it 4-0. A single from Dylan Morrissette put runners on the corners for Brennan Taylor who lifted a hit of his own to right-center, plating Guarino for the final run of the frame.
  • The Blue and Gold followed it up with a run in the second as a dingle by DeBellis, a walk to Seymour, and a single by Guarino loaded the bases for Liero who lifted his second SF of the game to score DeBellis, making it 6-0.
  • Messiah got a run in the third and two in the fourth to cut the Pride lead in half.
  • Widener struck again for a crooked number in the fourth, scoring six times on six hits. Keying the offense were RBI doubles from Garofalo and Morrissette as well as two-run hits by Taylor and D'Alessandro, extending the advantage to 12-3.
  • Two more came across in the fifth as with one out, Liero was hit by a pitch and Garofalo doubled. A passed ball scored the first run and Morrissette took care of the second with a single, his third hit and second run batted in of the game.
  • The Falcons continued to battle, posting three runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to chop the gap.
