OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Widener University men's lacrosse team threw a major scare into the Stevenson Mustangs as the Pride was upended 11-10 in an intense contest on Friday night.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Seven different players scored for Widener. Patrick Richardson led the way with four while Shane Cook, Mitchell Phillips, Gavin Kirkwood, Bryan Facciani, Brady Franks, and Paz Gismondi each had one.
• Gismondi, Davis, Anthony Paone, Robbie Johnston, John Dunbar, and Kevin Kerby each recorded an assist in the game.
• Matt Horton made 14 saves, his highest total in a conference game this season.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Pride started the game very well, netting the first two goals of the contest as Richardson and Cook each scored in the first five minutes.
• Widener held Stevenson off the board until the 4:04 mark when the Mustangs went on a 3-0 run in a matter of 2:40 to hold a 3-2 edge at the end of a quarter.
• With SU up 5-3, Facciani, Richardson, and Franks ripped three goals in a span of just 58 seconds, taking a 6-5 lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the second.
• Stevenson seemed to take control with a 5-0 run, bridging halftime as the Mustangs opened a 10-6 lead with 8:14 to go in the third.
• Once again, the Blue and Gold rallied scoring four of the next five goals as Gismondi, Kirkwood, Davis, and Phillips found rope to pull to 11-10 with less than two minutes to play.  
• Widener had the ball again down one with under 1:30 to play and got a good shot on net, but Sam Ross turned it aside. Through tough defensive pressure, Stevenson was able to run out the clock.

The Pride opens its postseason run with a semifinal game in the MAC Commonwealth Championship at Messiah on Wednesday, May 2. Game time will be announced at a later date.
