Lafferty Tosses Gem as @WidenerBaseball Clinches Postseason Berth

CHESTER, Pa. Josh Lafferty pitched eight splendid innings as the Widener University baseball team clinched a postseason berth with a 6-2 win against the Hood Blazers on Friday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lafferty picked up the win, matching the second longest outing of his career, going eight innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out five.
  • Each of the first three innings that Hood had a baserunner, the Pride got out of the frame with a double play.
  • Widener had 14 hits in the game, all singles. Greg Elfreth and Dylan Morrissette led the way with three. Nick D'Alessandro, Matthew Guarino, and Glenn Seymour had two apiece.
  • The bottom third of the order went 6-for-9 with a sac bunt, a sac fly, and a walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was scoreless into the fifth when the Blue and Gold loaded the bases as Matthew Guarino, Morrissette, and Brennan Taylor all singled in front of Elfreth who lined one through the middle to plate the first run of the game. A groundout by the next batter upped the lead to 2-0.
  • In the sixth, the Pride extended the lead. With two outs, Guarino and Morrissette singled before a walk by Brennan Taylor, loading the bases again for Elfreth who this time bounced a ball through the right side, plating two to make it 4-0.
  • Widener added to the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
  • Hood tallied single runs in each of the last two innings to create the final score.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride and Blazers are scheduled to wrap the series and the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28. First pitch from Frederick, Md. is slated for 4:00 p.m.
