Sterling Leads @WidenerSoftball with Eight RBI in Doubleheader Sweep of Lycoming

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team picked up a pair of important MAC Commonwealth wins as the Pride swept Lycoming on Strike Out Cancer day 10-2 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Katie Sterling had a big day at the plate going 4-for-7 in the two games with a homerun and eight RBI. With a hit in each contest, she extended her hitting streak to 12 games, matching the second longest of her career.
  • Lauren DelRomano had three hits in the twinbill while Liv Rogers had two.
  • The Pride got a pair of complete game efforts in the circle. Bella Bottini was outstanding in tossing the game two shutout, surrendering just four hits and striking out four.
  • In the opener, Katie Rabuck gave did not give up and earned run in six innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 10, Lycoming 2 – 6 innings)
  • Widener pounced with three runs in the first as a single by Sterling plated Carli Benozich who walked with one out and moved to second on a single by DelRomano. The next batter was Lindsey Cooper who put down a good squeeze bunt. On the throw to first, the ball sailed, allowing both DelRomano and Sterling to score.
  • Lycoming came back with a pair of runs in the second to make it 3-2.
  • The game remained that way until the fifth when Jamie Gosselin and DelRomano reached on walks in front of Sterling who hit her fourth homer of the year, extending the lead to 6-2.
  • In the sixth, WU loaded the bases with one out on a fielder's choice and a pair of walks. Sterling singled to center, bringing Gosselin and Katie Rabuck across. Cooper followed with a single to score Sterling and Benozich to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Widener 2, Lycoming 0)
  • Unlike the opener pitching dominated the second contest. Neither team cracked the scoreboard until the sixth as Bottini and Liz Nace traded zeroes for the first five innings.
  • Widener scored the only runs of the game in the sixth as Rabuck, Gosselin, and DelRomano singled to load the bases. Sterling stood in and ripped a single through the middle to score a pair.
  • The Warriors threatened in the seventh, loading the bases before Bottini got a grounder back to the circle to end the game.
