SCRANTON, Pa. – Mike Garofolo hit a three-run go-ahead homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Widener University baseball team topped the Scranton Royals 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Glenn Seymour and Greg Elfreth led the offense with three hits each.
• Nick D'Alessandro and Garofolo each had two with Garofolo driving in four runs.
• James Dougherty turned in career hits with seven innings pitched and seven strikeouts, not walking a batter.
• Bryson Turner and Joey Zettlemoyer each pitched a scoreless inning with Turner posting his first collegiate win and Zettlemoyer collecting his second save of the season.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• With the game tied 4-4 heading to the top of the ninth, the first two Widener hitters went down on strikes. A walk by Brennan Taylor and a single by Elfreth put two runners on for Garofolo who launched his second homer of the season, putting the Pride up 7-4.
• Widener jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as Elfreth led off with a double and came around to score thanks to a throwing error on a sac bunt that allowed Garofolo to reach. Two batters later, Seymour tripled to plate Garofolo and make it 2-0.
• Scranton responded with one in the bottom of the frame. The game remained 2-1 until the sixth when Seymour scored on a wild pitch after doubling to open the inning and moving to third on a sacrifice.
• A two-run homer in the bottom of the inning allowed the Royals to tie the game at 3-3.
• The Blue and Gold fought right back in the top of the seventh as Ryan Bennet walked, moved to second on a sac bunt and took third on a ground out before a Garofolo single scored him to put WU up 4-3. Once again, Scranton tied the game in the bottom of the inning, setting up Garofalo's heroics in the ninth.
