@WidenerBaseball Drops Slugfest to Rhodes

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After falling in an early hole, the Widener University baseball team battled back in the middle innings, but fell 9-8 to the Rhodes Lynx at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday evening.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Glenn Seymour led a trio of Widener players who had multi-hit games, going 3-for-4.
  • Nick D'Alessandro and Greg Elfreth had two hits each. D'Alessandro also had two RBI in the contest.
  • Widener outhit Rhodes 14-11.
  • Every member of the Pride starting lineup had at least one hit.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lynx struck first as a wild pitch allowed a runner on third to score.
  • Widener took the lead with two in the second. With one out, Matthew Guarino, Seymour, and Ricky Collings delivered three straight hits to tally the first run. D'Alessandro followed with a double to plate Seymour and make it 2-1.
  • Rhodes responded with three in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Blue and Gold got one of the runs back in the top of the third on a sac fly from Nathan Valenta to plate Mike Garofalo who was hit by a pitch. The Lynx also scored in the third, plating four runs to take a 8-3 lead.
  • After scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull to 8-5, the Pride scraped across two more in the sixth as Elfreth singled home Garofalo who had reached on an error. After a Valenta single put runners on the corners, Rhodes got Valenta in a rundown off first base. During the play, Elfreth took off and scored from third to chop the lead to 8-7.
  • The Lynx picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. It proved to be important as Widener scored again in the eighth when Stephen DeBellis came in on a throwing error.
 
UP NEXT
Widener is back in action on Wednesday morning when they take on Pitt-Greensburg at 9:00 a.m.
