@WidenerBaseball Scores Late to Beat Pitt-Greensburg

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University rallied from a sixth inning deficit to claim a 7-5 win against the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats from the Lake Myrtle Park Sports Complex on Wednesday morning

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mike Garofalo led the Pride with a pair of hits, gong 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Glenn Seymour scored both times he reached base.
  • Tommy Scharnikow walked and had two key sacrifices in the game.
  • Widener pitching struck out eight batters.
  • Ricky Collings picked up his first collegiate save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride jumped out with three runs in the opening inning as the first five batters in the order reached base. A walk by Nick D'Alessandro got things started before singles by Brennan Taylor and Garofalo moved the runners along. On the hit by Garofalo, the ball was bobbled in center allowing D'Alessandro to score and the other runners to move up. Greg Elfreth followed with a single before a groundout drove in the final run of the frame.
  • Widener extended the lead in the fifth as Seymour led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by Scharnikow, and came in to score on a throwing error.
  • Pitt-Greensburg saw its bats wake up in the top of the sixth inning, scoring five times to take a 5-4 lead.
  • The Blue and Gold tied it up in the bottom of the frame as with one out, Stephen DeBellis singled and Elfreth walked. After a double steal the runners were on second and third for Valenta who lifted a sac fly to right, plating DeBellis to knot the score at 5-5.
  • The next inning saw the Pride continue the offense as Seymour walked and was sacrificed to second. After a pop out, Taylor walked to put runners on first and second. Garofalo singled to bring home Seymour and make it 6-5. After a called strike on the next batter, the Pitt-Greensburg catcher threw to second behind the runner, but the ball went into centerfield, allowing Taylor to come in to extend the lead.
  • Joey Zettlemoyer and Ricky Collings authored three shutout innings of relief to close the game.
