WILKES-BARRE, Pa. –
Sardayah Sambo recorded a double-double and added five blocks in his final career game as the Widener University men's basketball team beat the Neumann Knights 82-75 to win the ECAC Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday afternoon from the Marts Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Sambo was named the tournament MVP for his efforts during the championship.
Elijah Boyd and
Sam Smith were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
NOTEWORTHY
Sambo finishes his career with 1,379 points, moving into 10th place all-time on the Widener scoring list. He also closed with 261 blocks, 80 of them this season, one better than his previous best of 79 in 20-15-16.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Sambo was one of four players in double figures for Widener with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with the five blocks.
- Elijah Boyd led all scorers with 25 points, tying his career-best.
- Sam Smith and Connor Laverty scored 13 and 10 respectively.
- Widener held a 48-44 advantage on the boards.
FIRST HALF NOTES
- Neither team held more than a four point lead in the opening 20 minutes, which featured eight ties and 11 lead changes.
- Boyd led the Pride with 16 points in the half and Smith contributed 11.
SECOND HALF NOTES
- Starting with the final basket of the first half, the Pride went on an 8-0 run to take a 47-40 lead three minutes into the second half.
- After Neumann rallied to tie the game at 51-51, Widener went on a deciding 16-6 run to go up by 10 with under eight minutes left.
- The Knights cut the lead to 74-72 with a minute left, but the Pride scored eight of the final 11 points to close the game.
