@WidenerBaseball Splits Twinbill with Husson

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Kade Jones in the opening game of a doubleheader as the Pride split a twinbill with the Husson Eagles on Sunday. WU won the opener 5-2 before falling in the second game 5-1.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jones pitched 6.2 innings allowing just two runs, walking one and striking out four in picking up his first collegiate win.
  • Brenna Taylor, Nick D'Alessandro, Mike Garofalo, and Stephen DeBellis each had two hits on the day.
  • D'Alessandro also walked three times, scored four runs, and stole four bases.
  • Garofalo drove in three runs and DeBellis knocked in a pair.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE (Widener 5, Husson 2)
  • The Pride jumped on the board in the top of the first inning when D'Alessandro walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double from Garofalo.
  • Widener extended the lead in the third as the top of the order struck again. D'Alessandro walked and stole second in front of DeBellis who walked and advanced the runner to third prior to stealing second himself. A groundout drove in D'Alessandro for the second run of the game before Dylan Peiffer singled to score DeBellis and make it 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Husson cut the lead to 3-1 where it stayed until the top of the seventh when the Blue and Gold picked up a pair of insurance runs on RBI singles by DeBellis and Garofalo, scoring D'Alessandro and Taylor.
  • The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Sean Maniatis needed one pitch to come in and secure the final out the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO (Husson 5, Widener 1)
  • After Husson had a run taken off the board in the top of the first inning for an appeal for a runner leaving third early on a potential sac fly, Widener opened the scoring in the bottom of the frame. A bunt single and stolen base by D'Alessandro and a bunt single by Taylor put runners on the corners for DeBellis who knocked in D'Alessandro with a groundout.
  • The Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 on a double, scoring a runner from second with two outs in the top of the fourth. Another two out run in the top of the fifth gave Husson its first lead of the game before a pair of tallies in the sixth made it 4-1. A single run in the seventh closed the scoring.
