EWING, N.J. – The Widener University baseball team bookended the game with a pair of runs each in the third and seventh innings, but struggled in the fourth and fifth as the Pride fell to No. 20 The College of New Jersey Lions 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Matthew Guarino led the Pride attack with three hits including a double, driving in two.
- Stephen DeBellis and Glenn Seymour each recorded two hits in the contest.
- The combination of Joseph Luscko and Sean McDermott pitched three scoreless innings to close the game, allowing just one hit between them.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning as after Chandler Liero reached on a fielder's choice and Mike Garofalo singled, Guarino doubled down the leftfield line, scoring both runners to make it 2-0 Pride.
- TCNJ fought back, scoring four times in the fourth to go up 4-2. The Lions would score once more in the next inning to push the edge to three.
- The Pride clawed back in the seventh as singles by Seymour and Liero, followed by a hit batsman to Guarino loaded the bases. A ground ball by Brennan Taylor scored a run with a throwing error allowing a second run to come across to chop the lead to 5-4.
