@WidenerWLax Wins OT Thriller Against Cabrini

CHESTER, Pa.Meg Steffney scored on a free position attempt just more than a minute into overtime as the Widener University women's lacrosse team got back on the winning track with a thrilling 11-10 victory against the Cabrini Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Melanie Bert led the Pride with six points on the strength of five goals and an assist. As part of the effort, she converted all four of her free position attempts.
  • Ashley Mastronardo recorded a hat trick in the contest, scoring the first goals of her collegiate career.
  • Kelly Lynch, Caroline Kelley, and Steffney had a goal each.
  • Emma DiGilio led WU with two assists.
  • Katie Hayes made 11 saves for the Pride.
  • The Blue and Gold had a season-high 29 ground balls in the game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bert got Widener on the board 41 seconds into the game, but Cabrini scored three of the next four goals to go up 3-2 at the 18:05 mark.
  • Mastronardo found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career a little less than two minutes later and was able to repeat the feat again with 11:30 to go as the Pride took a 4-3 lead.
  • After the Cavaliers scored 39 seconds later, WU tallied the final three goals of the half to go into the break up 7-4.
  • Cabrini methodically worked its way back into the contest, tying the game at just past the midway point of the second half before taking a 9-8 lead with 6:55 to go.
  • After the two teams traded goals near the five minute mark, Widener got the equalizer as Bert recorded her fifth marker of the game with 3:55 left in regulation on an empty net free position attempt as the Cavaliers goalie committed the infraction. Cabrini had one last shot at the buzzer, but it sailed wide.
  • Widener won the draw to open the extra possession and worked the ball around the fan before a foul gave Steffney a free position attempt just more than a minute into overtime. She calmly collected and deposited her eighth goal of the season, sealing the win.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride returns to action on Saturday, March 17 when it travels to Moravian. Opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
