UNION, N.J. –
Dylan Peiffer went 1-for-4 with an RBI, but the Widener University baseball team fell in its season opener 4-2 to the Kean Cougars on Wednesday night.
HIGHLIGHTS
- In addition to Peiffer's offense, Brennan Taylor went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Mike Garofalo stole a pair of bases.
- Making his collegiate debut, Kade Jones did not allow an earned run and struck out two in two innings.
- Sean Maniatis picked up where he left off last season, authoring two scoreless innings, fanning one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kean posted an unearned run in the first inning on a throwing error and then upped the lead to 3-0 in the third on a squeeze bunt and a bases loaded walk.
- A fielder's choice with runners at the corners in the fifth pushed a fourth run across for the Cougars.
- Widener got on the board in the sixth as Garofalo walked and stole second. With two outs, Peiffer singled to right-center to plate Garofalo.
- In the eighth, the Pride loaded the bases on walks before a groundout plated the final run of the contest.

The Blue and Gold returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when it takes on Immaculata in a doubleheader. First pitch from Maplezone in Garnet Valley, Pa. is slated for noon.
