READING, Pa. –
Jared Peters recorded a career-high scoring total for the second straight game, but the Widener University men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped, falling 78-66 to the Alvernia Golden Wolves in a MAC Commonwealth battle on Wednesday night.
Peters led the Blue and Gold with 19 points, besting the 14 he recorded against Messiah on Saturday. He connected on 7-for-12 shots from the floor, going 5-of-7 from distance.
Sardayah Sambo had 11 points and led Widener with eight rebounds.
Elijah Boyd chipped in 10.
Ryan McMahon and
Tyler Drews scored eight each.
The Pride started off the game well, as McMahon and Drews hit three-pointers on the first two shots of the contest. The Golden Wolves responded, going on a 21-7 run, going up by eight at the 11:34 mark. Alvernia led 25-18 with just more than nine minutes left, when Widener went on a 17-9 spurt of its own with six different players scoring, taking a 35-34 lead with 2:52 left in the frame. AU had the final say in the period, netting seven of the final nine points to go into halftime up by four.
The tight battle continued into the second stanza where the Pride outscored the Golden Wolves early to chop the lead 51-50 eight minutes in on a pair of
Elijah Boyd free throws. Alvernia started to pull away at that point, going on a 22-5 run during the next eight minutes. The Blue and Gold scored eight straight to cut the lead to 76-66 in the waning moments.
Widener returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 13 when it hosts Hood in a MAC Commonwealth contest. Tipoff from the Schwartz Center is slated for 3:00 p.m.
