Newlin Records Hat Trick as Field Hockey Offense Erupts in Win

MADISON, N.J. – The Widener University field hockey team exploded for seven goals, three by Eliza Newlin, as the Pride won its first game of the season, downing the Drew Rangers 7-0 on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened the scoring early as Sam Scoma delivered her first goal of the season coming from a rebound off a blocked shot a little over seven minutes into the contest.
  • Just more than three minutes later, Lexie Eberly netted her first of the year as Jackie Daniels passed the ball across the goal mouth for Eberly to redirect home and a 2-0 Pride lead.
  • Newlin started her scoring for the day midway through the first half, as she collected a pass from Meredith Benson and drove the ball into an open net at the 20:56 mark.
  • Early in the second half, Newlin struck again, collecting her own rebound off a save and beating the keeper. Three minutes later, she corralled another rebound, this time off a Kayla Herr attempt and fired it into the back of the net, putting Widener up 5-0 at the 43:08 mark.
  • Jordana Ambros got in on the action, scoring her first career goal as Daniels second assist of the night set up the newcomer. Herr capped the scoring, firing home a shot off a rebound from an initial strike by Newlin.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • It was the first career hat trick for Newlin whose previous career-high was two goals, against Immaculata on Sept. 4, 2015.
  • The seven goals for the Pride were its most since an 8-0 win in the previously mentioned 2015 matchup against Immaculata.
  • Herr continued her climb in the top-10 in career assists for Widener, recording the 13th helper all-time helper.
