Men's Lacrosse Clips Lycoming, 10-9; Kerby Provides Overtime Heroics

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (April, 29 2017) - Sophomore Kevin Kerby (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help lead the Widener University men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.

Lycoming got on the board first with three back-to-back goals to give them an early 3-0 lead. Junior Mitchell Phillips (Wyomissing, Pa.) broke up the scoring with a goal before the Warriors put one more away to send them into the second quarter with the 4-1 lead. The Pride continued to trail behind until junior Chris Drake (Morristown, N.J.)  tied the game, 5-5, with 4:39 remaining on the clock.

The warriors entered the third quarter ahead by two, however, Widener came out with vengeance and went on a 4-0 run to steal the lead. Lycoming then answered with two goals in the last three minutes of the quarter to tie the game, 9-9, and send it into overtime.

It only took Kerby one minute into overtime to find the back of the net and send Widener home with the 10-9 victory.

Drake had two goals, while sophomore Shane Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted one goal and two assists. Junior John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) lead the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Sophomore Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) picked up the win between the pipes with five saves.

Widener (8-7, MAC Commonwealth 5-3) earned the fourth seed and will host the first-round game of the conference tournament against fifth-seeded Lebanon Valley on Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m.
