Baseball Defeats Elizabethtown In Extra Innings, 5-4

CHESTER, Pa. (April 26, 2017) - Senior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) hit a single in the extra inning of play to drive in sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) and give the Widener University baseball team a 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown Wednesday evening.

Freshman Dylan Pieffer (Allentown, Pa.) opened the scoring for Widener in the second frame with a single through right center and Elizabethtown's Nick Lorenz knocked a homer out of left field to tie the game up at one.

Both teams scored another run in the third inning making it a 2-2 game. Junior Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) hit his first homer of the season, and the Blue Jays' Richy Masciarelli tied the game with an RBI single to left field.

The hosts blanked Widener in the following two frames and tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put them ahead 4-2.

After falling behind, the visitors quickly regrouped themselves by scoring two runs in the sixth frame to tie the game for a third time. Barnett grounded out to second base to advance DeBellis home and then senior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) advanced home on a throwing error.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the ninth frame, neither team could pull ahead and the game was pushed to an extra inning. Barnett then singled to center field to drive in DeBellis and give the visitors the 5-4 victory after 10 innings of play.

Senior Elliot Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound for the Pride. He hurled two innings, surrendered three hits, no runs, struck out none and did not issue a walk. Sophomore Bryson Turner (Mertztown, Pa.) was credited with the save and had one strike out. Andrew Brndjar suffered the loss for Elizabethtown. He pitched two innings, surrendered three hits, one run, struck out two and issued one walk.

Widener (23-11, MACC 11-7) will travel on Friday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. as they take on Hood in Frederick, Md.
