CHESTER, Pa. (April 28, 2017) - The Widener University baseball team fought hard but was unable to pull off the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth contest against Hood, as they fell 8-4 on Friday afternoon. 

Hood took control of the game early by scoring one run in the first frame and then four more in the second while holding Widener to zero. The Pride began to claw back in the fifth inning by scoring four runs and cutting the deficit down to one. Senior Greg McDonough tripled to right center to drive in three runs and then sophomore Stephen DeBellis hit a single to the short stop for the final run that inning. 

The score remained 5-4 until the eighth inning when the Blazers tacked on three more runs to secure the victory. The visitors did not quit as they scored one more run in the final inning with a second RBI single from DeBellis, however, it was not enough to overcome the deficit. 

Travis Schweizer picked up the win on the mound for Hood by pitching seven innings, surrendering seven hits, four runs, striking out three and issued one walk. Senior Kyle McKelvy suffered the loss for the Pride. He hurled six innings, surrendered twelve hits, five runs, struck out one and issued three walks. 

Widener (23-12, MACC 11-8) will return home tomorrow against Hood at 12:00 p.m. Prior to the doubleheader, twelve seniors will be honored for their contributions to the program.
