Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Nationally-Ranked Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2017) – The Widener University women's lacrosse team fell to #5 Messiah by a 15-3 score on Tuesday afternoon at the Starry Athletic Complex.

Messiah (13-2, MAC Commonwealth 8-0) scored 15 unanswered goals, which included opening up a 12-0 lead by the recess, to remain undefeated in conference play. Jenna Stover opened the scoring less than four minutes into the contest and added two more markers during a hot stretch when the Falcons netted four goals in a span of just 33 seconds.

Despite falling behind, the Pride fought back and were able to get on the board in the second half. Sophomore Kelly Lynch (Springfield, Pa.), Melanie Bert (Oceanside, N.Y.) and sophomore Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.) all finished free position attempts down the stretch for Widener to produce the final outcome.

Stover led the offensive outburst for Messiah by recording five points on four goals and one assist. She was also among three Falcons to cause three turnovers. Courtney Wagner contributed three helpers, while Stephanie Athens factored into four goals and won four draws. Alexa Dipeso turned away two shots during the first half to pick up the win.

In addition to having three different players find the back of the net, Widener got contributions from senior Gianna Ciro (Media, Pa.), freshman Erika Peters (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Margot Coates (Wenonah, N.J.). Ciro was credited with two caused turnovers, while Peters and Coates each picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover. Sophomore Katie Hayes (Lebanon, Pa.) made another solid relief appearance between the pipes by making four saves and not allowing a goal in more than 13 minutes of action.

Widener (4-11, MAC Commonwealth 1-6) will conclude its 2017 campaign when it hosts Lycoming on Saturday, Apr. 29 at 1:00 p.m. Seniors Angie Baricko (Toms River, N.J.), Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) Ciro and Morales will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the contest.
