Women’s Lacrosse Drops Seesaw Battle to Arcadia

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2017) – Sophomore Kelly Lynch (Springfield, Pa.) had a career evening by factoring into nine goals, but it wasn't enough, as the Widener University women's lacrosse team fell to Arcadia by a 14-13 score in a seesaw battle which featured eight ties and four lead changes on Tuesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener took a 12-11 advantage when freshman Meg Steffney found the back of the net with 8:30 left in regulation, but Arcadia came back and evened the score for the eighth time when Julia Imbert found Victoria Mollitor with just over five minutes remaining. Shortly after a Widener defender was issued a yellow card, the Knights then took advantage of the opportunity and seized the lead on a Nicole Hutson marker.

The Pride had one last chance to at least tie the game and send the teams to overtime by winning the final draw and earning a free position opportunity. Kelly Lynch, however, had her ensuing shot attempt stopped by Knight netminder Liz Stierle to keep the visitors ahead. A charging call on the Pride with just under 30 seconds on the clock then allowed Arcadia to run out the clock.

In the first half, Widener built up a 7-3 lead by netting four unanswered goals in a span of 9:15. Lynch tallied two goals and an assist before senior Jamie Parent charged in for an unassisted marker to cap the hot stretch. But despite surrendering the lead, Arcadia (6-6, MAC Commonwealth 1-4) fought back with a new goalie between the pipes making several key saves and capitalizing on numerous free position opportunities. Allegra Benites converted three free position shots in just 2:38, and Stierle turned away a go-ahead attempt by Widener's Lynch at the buzzer to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 7-7.

Benites led the Arcadia offense by tallying five points on three goals and two assists, which included setting up the team's final two markers of the contest. Erin Misner also notched a hat trick and won six draws, while Stierle made six saves to pick up the victory in net.

Widener (3-10, MAC Commonwealth 0-5) was paced by Lynch in the setback. The sophomore scored a career-high four goals and dished out five assists to finish the evening with nine points, which matched a collegiate best. Sophomore Kristi Rohrer won five draws, and senior Angie Baricko scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.

The Pride will next host Hood on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
