Men’s Lacrosse Runs Past Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2017) – Senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) found the back of the net four times to help lead the Widener University men's lacrosse team to a decisive 15-8 victory over Arcadia in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at Jean Lenox West Field.

Senior Chris Sanchez (Flanders, N.J.) scored two quick unassisted goals to give Widener a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest, but Arcadia responded by knotting up the score when Joe Stanton sent home a shot at the 7:32 mark.

Widener, however, blitzed ahead by scoring six unanswered between the first and six quarters to gain control for the rest of the contest. Schulte recorded a natural hat trick in a span of 2:30, and junior Mitchell Phillips (Wyomissing, Pa.) rifled a shot that reached the back of the net with 50 seconds on the clock to give the Pride a 9-3 advantage at recess.

Even though the Knights were able to net the first goal of the second half, their hopes were dashed when sophomore Shane Cook (Lincoln, Pa.) finished a pass from classmate Chris Heuston (Malvern, Pa.) to spark a 5-2 run for the remainder of the quarter. Freshman James Arbisi (Wilton, Conn.) later added his first career marker in the waning seconds to produce the final outcome.

Schulte and freshman Paz Gismondi (West Deptford, N.J.) paced the offense for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a commanding 50-27 margin. Gismondi tallied a goal and three assists, while Schulte scored four times and also scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore netminder Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) made 12 saves in three quarters of action.

Arcadia (3-10, MAC Commonwealth 1-4) was led by a pair of three-point performances from Stanton and Austin Williams. A.J. Beck set a single-game program record by making 21 saves from between the pipes.

Widener (6-6, MAC Commonwealth 3-2) will look to stay in contention for a postseason berth when it next visits Hood on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
