ASTON, Pa. (April 11, 2017) - Junior Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) hurled a complete game and struck out a career high of seven batters to help propel the Widener University baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Neumann on Tuesday afternoon.
Widener took the lead quickly in the first frame with an RBI from senior Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) to advance senior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) home. Sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) then scored on a throwing error in the next inning to put them ahead 2-0 and cap off the scoring. The Pride never looked back after those two runs and blanked Neumann for the remainder of all nine innings.
Guarino picked up the win on the mound for the visitors. He pitched nine innings, surrendered three hits, no runs, struck seven batters, and issued one walk. Matt Kelty suffered the loss for Neumann. Kelty threw five innings, surrendered four hits, two runs, struck out struck out four and issued one walk.
The Pride will return home as they take on Arcadia on Friday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
