GALLOWAY, N.J. (March 9, 2017) – The Widener University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to Stockton by an 8-3 score on Thursday at the Stockton Turf Field.
The Pride got off to a quick start, as freshman Melanie Burt (Oceanside, N.Y.) finished a pass from sophomore
Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.) just 24 seconds into the game before freshman
Meg Steffney (West Deptford, N.J.) doubled the margin just over seven minutes later. Stockton, however, answered with a 5-0 run by having five different players find the back of the net to pull ahead. Kristen Russo and Abbey Yannacone each converted free position attempts during the stretch, and the Ospreys carried a 5-3 lead into the break.
Stockton (2-1) carried over the momentum it gained in the first half into the second and also kept the visitors off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. Widener had its opportunities and attempted six shots, including one on a free position opportunity, but nothing was able to get past goalkeeper Maura Twiggs. Kelsey Perst and Russo each scored on the other end for the Ospreys during the half to help produce the final outcome.
Russo netted a hat trick and won four draws to lead the way for Stockton, which had a 24-13 advantage in total shots and forced 23 turnovers. Twiggs made eight saves between the pipes. Pride senior
Grace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.) turned away 10 shots, and Rohrer finished with three draws to go along with one ground ball and a helper.
Widener (1-2) will return to action when it hosts Neumann on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.
