WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (March 4, 2017) – Freshman
Melanie Bert (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored four goals, including three in the second half, to help propel the Widener University women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over King's on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Bert opened the scoring for the Pride just 23 seconds into the game, but King's (1-2) responded by netting two in a row and moved ahead when Anastasia Araviaskis converted a free position attempt at the 24:23 mark. After Araviaskis found the back of the net again to give the hosts a 3-2 advantage, the Pride answered back with a 5-1 run which began when sophomore
Kelly Lynch (Springfield, Pa.) netted her third goal of the season with 19:08 on the clock. King's, however, finished the half strong and got back-to-back goals from Gabriella Morrocu to even the score heading into halftime.
After the recess, senior
Angie Baricko (Toms River, N.J.) put the Pride back in the lead and ignited another offensive explosion for the visitors by hitting the back of the net in the fifth minute of the frame. Senior
Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) capped the streak of five straight tallies by finishing a pass from sophomore
Kaylee Horchak (Mullica Hill, N.J.) to make it 12-7 with 13:56 remaining, and the Monarchs were unable to recover.
Sophomore
Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.) paced Widener (1-1) by registering a career-high five points on three goals and two assists. She also finished with a career-best four draw controls. Bert scored four goals on seven shot attempts, while Parent won five draws and picked up three ground balls. Junior netminder
Grace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.) made seven saves between the pipes.
King's was led by Morrocu's six-point effort, which included providing a game-high five goals and one assist. Araviaskis finished with a hat trick while also causing two turnovers and winning two draws. Victoria Zawacki turned away five shots.
The Pride will return to action when they visit Stockton on Thursday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m.
