Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeats DeSales, 12-5, to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

CHESTER, Pa. (March 25, 2017) – Senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) factored into five goals and sophomore Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) made double-digit saves for the sixth straight game in leading the Widener University men's lacrosse team to a 12-5 victory over DeSales on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Widener (3-4) rattled off six straight goals to open the contest and never looked back. Schulte put the Pride on the board at the 7:25 mark, and junior Anthony Paone (Warrington, Pa.) doubled the margin by winning the ensuing faceoff and firing the ball past goalkeeper Matt Barry just 12 seconds later.

The hosts continued to pad their lead in the second quarter, as freshman Timmy Certeza (Towson, Md.) scored his first collegiate goal to make it 5-0 with 12:38 on the clock before Taylor factored into two straight markers just 48 seconds apart to put Widener up by a comfortable 8-1 margin. The Bulldogs, who were held off the scoreboard for the opening 20:08 of the contest, then got an unassisted tally from Kevin Monaghan to create an 8-2 score at the recess.

Widener came out strong again out the break and blanked the Bulldogs for the second time in three quarters. Schulte added two goals, included one on an extra-man opportunity, during the stretch to keep the Pride in control. DeSales (2-4) attempted to rally by scoring three unanswered to begin the fourth quarter, but the early hole would prove to be too much to overcome.

Horton turned away 11 shots to pick up the victory between the pipes for Widener, which won 15 of 20 faceoffs, outshot its opponent by a 43-30 margin and had a 32-24 advantage in ground balls. Schulte provided a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Taylor added two markers and a pair of helpers. Paone picked up eight ground balls.

DeSales was paced by Justin Monaghan and Jake Zito in the losing effort. Monaghan tallied two goals and an assist, and Zito finished with three ground balls as well as three caused turnovers. Barry made 11 saves in the cage.

Widener will open up Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action when it hosts Alvernia on Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m.
