ASTON, Pa. (March 24, 2017) – Senior
Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) drove in three runs to help lead the Widener University baseball team to a 7-5 comeback victory over Albright on Friday afternoon at the Maplezone Sports Institute.
Albright opened up the scoring early in the top of the first inning to put them ahead 1-0 with an RBI single from Tanner Brescancine. The Lions then added to their lead in the second-inning with a double from Austin Roth that sent in Zach Krause to home plate.
Despite the 2-0 deficit, Widener came alive after a scoreless inning and began to chip away in the fourth-frame. Junior
Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) got the Pride on the board with a single up center field to drive in sophomore
Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) for a 2-1 score.
The Pride carried over the momentum it gained in the fourth-inning into the fifth and tacked on four more runs to steal the lead. Healey started the rally with a double to center field that brought in two runs and shortly afterwards advanced on an error to put the Pride ahead 4-2. Three plays later, a passed ball was charged to the Albright catcher, which allowed DeBellis to cross the plate to make it 5-2 at the end of the fifth-inning.
The hosts continued to pad their lead in the sixth-frame when
Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) scored off of a sacrifice hit to left field from Healey, however, Albright quickly fought back in the eighth by scoring two runs to make it a game and cut the score down to 6-4. The two run inning was not enough for Albright as the Pride tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth that allowed them to pull away with the victory.
Junior
Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) won his first game of the season for Widener by striking out three and walking only two in five frames. He also only allowed four hits and two runs. Albright's Mat Costa was tagged with the loss and fell to 1-1 for surrendering three runs and four hits. He also struck out none and did not issue a walk.
Widener (10-5, MACC 3-1) returns to action tomorrow Saturday, March 25 at 12 p.m. against Albright (6-7. MACC 2-2) as they travel to Reading, Pa.
