CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2017) – The Widener University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Marymount by a 13-8 score on Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Marymount (3-0) built up a quick 3-0 lead over Widener until sophomore
Kelly Lynch fired back and put one in the net off of a free position shot to put the Pride on the board with 22:27 on the clock. The Saints, however, answered right back by scoring four unanswered goals and went into the recess with a commanding 9-3 lead.
Widener did not give up and began chipping away at the deficit in the second half. Senior
Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) found the net with 26:30 left to play, and
Meg Steffney (West Deptford, N.J.) added another tally just two minutes to cut the margin and make it 10-5. Senior
Angie Baricko (Toms River, N.J.) then scored twice in a span of just over three minutes down the stretch, but the earlier deficit would prove to be too much for the Pride to overcome.
Holly Reik turned away 10 shots to earn the victory between the pipes for Marymount, while the Pride's
Grace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves in the setback.
Widener (0-1) will return to action when it travels to face King's on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m.
