OWINGS MILLS, Md. –
Nick Jackson scored 12 of his season-high 19 points after halftime as the Widener University men's basketball team outlasted the Stevenson Mustangs 78-75 in overtime in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Saturday afternoon.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Jackson led four Pride players in double figures with his 19 points, one shy of his career-high. He also tied a personal best with eight rebounds.
- Elijah Boyd netted 18 and Tyler Drews tallied 17 with both pulling down seven boards. Ryan McMahon scored 13 with seven assists.
- Widener shot 47 percent (31-for-66) from the floor and committed just 10 turnovers in the 45 minutes.
- The win was the 250th for Chris Carideo as a collegiate head coach.
FIRST HALF NOTES
- The two teams played very evenly through the midway mark of the opening frame as the half featured four ties and 11 lead changes.
- After a layup by Drews gave the Pride its largest lead of the stanza at 21-18 with 9:31 left, the Blue and Gold went cold from the field, missing its next eight shots, allowing the Mustangs to go on a 12-0 run, taking a nine-point lead with less than five minutes to go.
- Widener responded, starting with a Boyd layup at the 4:26 mark, using a 12-1 of its own to end the half up 33-31.
- Boyd had 10 points in the half, connecting on 4-of-6 shots including both of his three-point attempts.
SECOND HALF NOTES
- The Pride saw the late first half surge carry into the second period, scoring 12 of the first 15 points to go up 45-34 on a McMahon layup four minutes in.
- Trading baskets for the next four minutes, Widener held a 52-41 lead with 12 minutes to go before Stevenson rallied.
- Battling back, SU closed the half on an extended 22-11 spurt to tie the score at 63-63 on a Danzel Wright layup and one with 1:09 left in regulation, forcing the eventual overtime.
OVERTIME NOTES
- Widener never trailed in the extra session, scoring the first six points on a Drews jumper and a pair of layups from Jackson.
- The Pride connected from the line down the stretch, hitting on seven of 10 attempts at the stripe.
- Drews led the way with six points while Jackson finished with four.
