MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore
Madison Ireland dropped 19 points and dished eight assists, leading the Widener University women's basketball team to a 70-63 victory over the Albertus Magnus Falcons in the Drew University Tip-Off Tournament at Baldwin Gymnasium on Friday evening.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Ireland led the Pride with 19 points on 4-8 of shooting.
- Allison Gallagher also tallied double digits with 13 points and pulled down seven boards.
- Devan Rimmer was just shy of double figures with nine points.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- After falling behind 3-1 early, Gallagher hit a three-point shot to trigger a 12-2 run for the Pride that put it ahead for the remainder of the quarter.
- The Falcons cut the deficit down to three twice, however, Nikki Petri answered with a trey each time to bolster the lead for the Pride.
- Ireland led the way with eight points, connecting on all three of her shots while going 3-4 at the line.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Widener continued to hold onto its lead with Gallagher providing majority of the offense to end the half ahead by six.
- A defensive frame, the Blue and Gold outscored the Falcons 13-11 and held Albertus Magnus to 35.7 percent from the floor.
- Ireland and Angelica Borja added three points while Rimmer added two.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Widener's lead ballooned to 14 when Kyra Schenk finished a layup to make it 47-33 with less than seven minutes remaining.
- Despite the lead, the Falcons began to chip away and ended the quarter only down by three.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Albertus Magnus temporarily took the lead, but the Pride quickly recovered and regained the edge when Gallagher connected on a layup off a fast break to put her team ahead 64-62 with 1:56 on the clock.
- Widener closed the game on a 6-1 run to earn the 70-63 victory.
