READING, Pa. – A season of historic proportions came to a heartbreaking end as the Widener University field hockey team fell 1-0 in a shootout to the FDU-Florham Devils in the ECAC Division III Championship semifinals on the campus of Alvernia University.
A scoreless first half saw Widener hold a 5-3 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to put an attempt on target. The Pride was able to muster a pair of shots on goal in the second half, but both were turned aside.
Heading into overtime, the Blue and Gold controlled the play, taking the only two shots on cage in the opening extra session and three of the four total shots in the stanza, however, the game remained scoreless. In the second overtime, the Devils started to find their offense, but
Sabrina Roberto was able to come up with a pair of saves to send the game into a shootout. The second player for FDU was able to poke home the only goal of the shootout, lifting the Devils to the win.
The game concluded a season that saw Widener win the second most matches in a year in program history, qualify for the MAC Commonwealth tournament for the first time since 2009, and win its first ever postseason game with a 2-0 victory against DeSales in the ECAC quarterfinals.
