Volleyball Splits Matches on Final Day of Knights Invitational

ASTON, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2016) – Freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) and sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) each recorded a double-double to lead the Widener University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Rutgers-Camden at the Knights Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Pride also fell to host Neumann in a five-set marathon earlier in the day.

Neumann 3, Widener 2 (26-28, 25-11, 22-25, 25-17, 12-15)
Widener came up just short in a back-and-forth affair against the host Knights in a morning match. The Pride forced a fifth and deciding set, which was also tightly contested, but unfortunately could not complete a comeback. Senior Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) and Dangel tallied 22 assists apiece, while Dangel fell just short of a double-double with nine digs. Sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) racked up nine blocks to go along with 11 kills.

Widener 3, Rutgers-Camden 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-16)
After a tough start, Widener ended the tournament on a high note by sweeping Rutgers-Camden in straight sets. The Pride got off to a hot start and built up a 9-2 lead in the opening frame to set the tone for the entire match. Dangel registered her first collegiate double-double with a career-high 27 assists and 10 digs, and Dorman finished with her fourth double-double of the fall by contributing 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) hit at a .357 clip by registering six kills against only one error on 14 swings.

At the end of the afternoon, Dorman was one of eight players named to the all-tournament team. The team's top scoring threat finished the two-day event with 53 kills, 36 digs, four blocks and a service ace over four matches.

Widener (4-7) returns home to face Wesley on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
