Baseball Topples Stevenson For MAC Commonwealth Road Victory

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (April 9, 2016) – The Widener baseball team snapped a two-game conference losing streak, as they defeated Stevenson 6-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Friday.
 
The Blue and Gold improve to 14-10 overall and 7-3 in MAC Commonwealth action as Stevenson falls to 14-14 and 5-5 in conference play.
 
The Pride trailed the Mustangs, 1-0, heading into the third inning. With one out, junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) singled to right field. The third baseman would advance to second as Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) reached on a fielding error by catcher Jake Dimon.
 
McDonough would advance to third base on a single by Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.), while Elfreth was thrown out trying to score. Barnett and McDonough would score on the very next play as Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) reached on a field error by Matt Myers.
 
Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) would lead off the top of the fourth inning with a single to right center. He would later score on an RBI double by freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.).
 
The Blue and Gold added some insurances run in the ninth inning as they crossed the plate three times. D'Alessandro, Elfreth and McDonough all recorded an RBI in the final frame.
 
Junior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) improved his record to 4-1, as he allowed six hits, one run while striking out six over seven innings of work.
 
Elfreth finished the game 3-for-5 from the plate with one run batted in. Two of three hits by the junior were doubles, as he now leads the team with nine doubles on the year.
 
Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) was 2-for-4 from the plate with one run as he earned the start behind home. D'Alessandro was 2-for-3 from the dish with two runs batted in, and a run scored.
 
Widener combined for tens hits and four runs batted in against the Mustangs.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Sunday as they look to take the season series against the Mustangs. First pitch for the double-header of the MAC Commonwealth series is slated for 1 p.m. in Owings Mills, Md. Due to poor field conditions, the game has been moved to be played at Stevenson. It was orginally scheduled for Saturday in Chester, Pa.
