Baseball Earns Series Win In Sunday Split With Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (April 10, 2016) – The Widener baseball team earned the season series win, as they split the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with Stevenson at Sugar Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Pride were victorious in game one with a score of 3-1, but were unable to secure the season sweep as they fell in game two, 7-5.
 
Widener finishes the day 15-11 overall, and 8-4 in MAC Commonwealth action, while the Mustangs improve to 15-15 and 6-6 in conference play.
 
After a scoreless first three innings, Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J) opened the scoring with a two-run RBI single to right field in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The freshman knocked in juniors Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) and Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.).
 
McDonough would reach base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning. The junior center fielder would get into scoring position with his 13th stolen base of the year. Designated hitter Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) would single through the left side to score McDonough, as Widener took a 3-0 advantage.
 
Sophomore Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) earned his fifth victory of the season as he allowed one run and four hits in the complete game victory. The righty fanned eight Mustangs, while only walking two.
 
McDonough finish the game 1-for-3 from with two runs scored and a stolen base. Healey was 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI, as Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate. Lowery added a stolen base for the Pride.
 
Game two saw the late rally for the Pride come up short, as they lost to the Mustangs with a score of 7-5.  The Pride fell behind early as Stevenson opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning.
 
The Blue and Gold would get one back as Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) recorded a sacrifice fly to right field to score Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.).
 
Stevenson would widen the lead as they score four unanswered runs from the second and fourth innings. McDonough would score in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch by Michael Remeikis.
 
Enos would add another run batted in as he hit in Barnett on a single to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
Barnett led off the seventh inning with a triple to right field, and would later score on the play that Enos reached base on. The shortstop reached base on a fielding error by Connor Wasilnak.
 
Sophomore John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) would knock in Healey with a double down the left field line.
 
Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) received the loss on the hill as he allowed seven runs and ten hits in four plus innings of work. The senior lefty walked two and fanned four on the mound.
 
Widener will back in action on Monday as they travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on Johns Hopkins. First pitch for the non-conference game is slated for 3:30 p.m.
