Streaking Blue Jays Defeat Baseball in Non-Conference Contest

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 11, 2016) – The Widener baseball team was unable to stop a streaking Johns Hopkins team as they dropped the non-conference contest, 10-7, on Monday afternoon at Babb Field.

The Pride fall to 15-12, while the Blue Jays improve to 17-9-1 and extend their winning streak to five games.

Junior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) attempted to steal second base in the first inning, but was caught in a run-down. The run-down allowed Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) to score from third base, as Widener took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Freshman James Dougherty (Glenside, Pa.) would shut down the Blue Jays in order to close out the first frame.

Johns Hopkins would take the lead in the second inning on a two run home run by Brian Lin. Both teams would exchange scoreless frames in the third inning, but the Blue Jays would add to its lead with one run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Tommy Mee.

Barnett would get the scoring started in the top of the fifth inning as he would double home Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.). After advancing to third on the play, McDonough would score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.).

Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) would keep the inning alive as he reached base on an error by Conor Reynolds. The error on the play would score Barnett from third base and tie the game at four apiece in the fifth inning. Reynolds would make up for the error as he would score Ryan Orgielewicz on a sacrifice fly to give Johns Hopkins a 5-4 advantage.

After leading off the top of the sixth inning with a single down the left field line, Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J) would score from second base on a base hit by Elfreth through the left side.

Dougherty would once again sit down the Blue Jays in order as he would finish the day after six innings of work. The righty closed the day after allowing four runs and six hits, while striking out a career high five batters.

The Blue Jays would add three runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Barnett finished the game 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and one run batted in. Enos ended with two hits in four at-bats with a double against Johns Hopkins.

Widener will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Eastern in a cross-over of teams from Middle Atlantic Conference. First pitch is slated to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
