Rohrer Wins It For Women's Lacrosse in Overtime Conference Tilt

CHESTER, Pa. (April 6, 2016) – Freshman Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.) lifted the Widener women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 overtime victory over Alvernia in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth game at Edith R. Dixon Field on Wednesday night.
 
The Blue and Gold improve to 5-4 on the year, and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth action, while the Crusaders fall drop to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
 
The freshman, who entered off the bench for the Pride, recorded the game-winning goal with just 2:16 remaining in the second half of the overtime period. Widener faced an early challenge in the first overtime as Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) received a yellow card just under 30 seconds in the extra session.
 
Widener's defense held Alvernia to only three shots while Parent was serving out the card. Parent entered back in play just as Abby McCarthy turned the ball over for the Crusaders.
 
The second half of the extra session was started off by a draw control taken by senior Meghan Garvey (Avondale, Pa.). Just seconds later, Rohrer knocked home her eighth goal of the season to give the Pride the victory.
 
The game was held scoreless has both teams could not find the back of the net, until Garvey gave Widener the one goal advantage with 14:30 left in the first half. Julie Sutton would answer back for the Crusaders four minutes later as she scored on a pass from Abby McCarthy.
 
After a goal by Parent, Alvernia would pick up two goals from McCarthy. A goal from Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, Pa.) and Rohrer tied the game up at three a piece heading into halftime. The Crusaders would open up the second half with two early goals.
 
Morgan Scott (Cinnaminson, N.J.) cut into the lead with a goal at the 18:50 mark of the second half. The Pride were up a player as Amanda Moyer sat out for a yellow card.
 
Two goals from McCarthy and a goal from Rachel Judge gave Alvernia a 8-7 lead with less than six minutes to play. Garvey tied the game at eight a piece with 5:39 remaining in the contest.
 
Just over 30 seconds into the second stanza of the overtime session, Rohrer ended the night with the game-winnig goal for a 9-8 victory.
 
The freshman finished the game with three goals and an assist off of the bench. Parent and Garvey each finished with two goals and four draw controls, while Parent added an assistant and one ground ball.
 
Grace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.), who caused two turnovers, earned the victory between the pipes after making five saves on 13 shots on net. The junior also picked up three ground balls.
 
Widener will be back in action on Saturday as they take on MAC Commonwealth foe Lycoming at 1:00 p.m. in Williamsport, Pa.
