Wesley Hands Baseball First Home Loss of the Season

CHESTER, Pa. (April 5, 2016) – The Widener baseball team fought hard but was unable to pull off the non-conference contest against Wesley, as they fell 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pride, who dropped their first home contest of the season, fall to 12-10, while the Wolverines improve to 14-12. Widener entered the game with a 5-0 record on Chester campus.

Freshman James Dougherty (Glenside, Pa.) notched a stellar performance for his first collegiate appearance on the mound. The righty allowed four hits and fanned two in six innings of work.

Dougherty held the Wolverines in check by allowing two walks and only one run in the top of the third inning on sacrifice fly by KeAndre Jones.

Widener opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) scored on a throwing error by the catcher Cody Dmiterchik.

Lowery finished the game 1-for-3 from the plate with one walk. The sophomore's hit was a double to left field in the second inning.

The Pride were held to seven hits, while Wesley recorded only eight hits on the game. Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) was 2-for-3 from the plate with one walk and two stolen bases. The junior was also caught once while attempting to steal second base.

He added a stolen base on the very next play, as he finished the game 1-for-4 from the plate.

The Wolverines started to creep away from Widener as they added three runs on two hits in the top of the eighth inning. Trey Mears recorded a two-run double down the left field line to give Wesley a 3-1 advantage.
