Baseball Falls to Conference Foe Messiah On Senior Day

CHESTER, Pa. (April 29, 2016) – The Widener baseball team could not slow down the hot bats of Messiah, as the Pride fell 7-2 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth game on Friday afternoon.

The Blue and Gold fall to 20-15-1 and 13-6 in MAC Commonwealth play, while the Falcons improve to 20-17 and 12-7 in conference action.

Messiah opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on a ground out by Joseph Saufley. Adam Janney, who reached base on a triple to left center field scored on the play. The Falcons would add runs to take a 7-0 lead into the eighth inning.

After a single by Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) and a walk by Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.), there were runners on second and third for Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.). The junior catcher would force a full-count before walking to load the bases.

Sophomore Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) grounded out to first base on a 2-1 count to score D'Alessandro. The very next pitch, junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) would ground out to the first baseman to score DeBellis from third.

Joesph Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) would fall to 3-3 on the hill as he allowed six hits and six runs in five-plus innings of work on the mound. The lefty fanned four and walked one on the hill.

D'Alessandro was 2-for-5 from the dish with a run scored, while DeBellis was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two walks.

The Falcons recorded nine hits and only walked twice in the MAC Commonwealth contest. The loss was only the second time all year that the Pride have dropped a game at their home field in Chester, Pa. The Blue and Gold have also scored at least one run in all of their games this season.

Prior to the game, the baseball program honored the three graduating seniors, Santone, Dominick Mancuso and Kevin Scisorek.

The Pride will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Messiah in Grantham, Pa. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
