Baseball Locks Up Second Seed with Split Against Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (April 30, 2016) – The Widener baseball team locked up the second seed in the upcoming Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth tournament with a split against Messiah on Saturday.
 
The Pride improve to 21-16-1 and 14-7 in MAC Commonwealth action, while Messiah falls to 21-18 and 13-8  in conference play. Widener took game one with a score of 5-3, but dropped game two with a final of 7-1.
 
The Blue and Gold opened the scoring early in game one with three runs in the first inning. Freshman Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) knocked an RBI triple to right field on the second pitch of his at-bat. DeBellis, who scored on the play due to an error by Josh Good, hit in Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) and Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.).
 
Widener would add a run in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by Elfreth, which scored freshman Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J.) from second base. Two innings later, Elfreth would strike again with his second hit and run batted in of the game. On a full-count, the junior rocketed a single up the middle to score Glenn Seymoour (Eagleville, Pa.) from second.
 
Messiah would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) improved to 7-1 on the hill as he allowed six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out a pair.
 
Matthew Stranix (South Harrison, N.J.) recorded his first save of the season as he walked two in one inning of work on the mound. 
 
In game two, the Falcons put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Kyle Wickenhei led the inning off with a first pitch single down the right field line. He scored on a ground out to second base by Hayner.
 
The Pride were held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, where they were able to score a run with one out. After Taylor advanced to third on a passed ball, Elfreth knocked him in on an RBI double to left center.
 
Elfreth finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI. Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) added a hit as he finished 1-for-3 from the plate.
 
James Dougherty (Glenside, Pa.) received the loss after allowing seven hits and six runs in two innings of work.
 
The Blue and Gold close out the regular season with a record of 21-16-1 and 21-18 in MAC Commonwealth play, as they will be the number two seed in this week's upcoming MAC Commonwealth baseball tournament. Widener also did not get shutout once throughout the regular season.
 
The Pride and Falcons will face off in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth tournament on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at the PEOPLEsBank Park in York, Pa.
