Women’s Lacrosse Routs Hood in Conference Opener

FREDERICK, Md. (Apr. 2, 2016) – Senior Meghan Garvey (Avondale, Pa.) set or matched a career high in all three offensive scoring categories to help lead the Widener University women's lacrosse team to a 19-5 rout of Hood in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon.

After Garvey won the opening draw, senior Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, N.J.) found junior Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, Pa.) for the team's first goal just 11 seconds into the game. Garvey then set up classmate Morgan Scott (Cinnaminson, N.J.) for a marker 30 seconds later before finding the back of the net herself to give the Pride a quick 3-0 advantage with 28:45 on the clock.

Widener kept its foot on the gas pedal throughout the first half and got markers from senior Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, Pa.) and Sailey followed by another goal from freshman Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.), prompting Hood to finally take a timeout less than 10 minutes into the match. The break, however, did not slow down the Pride offense, and the visitors went into the recess leading by a lopsided score of 12-4.

The second half started just like the first with Garvey leading the charge. The senior factored into the first three Widener goals of the frame and would cap off the day by tacking on another goal and assist in the frame. Junior Angie Baricko (Toms River, N.J.) later netted the last tally of the match to produce the final outcome.

Garvey finished her career day with 11 points on five goals and six assists for Widener, which also finished with a commanding 24-12 advantage in total shots and placed every single attempt on target. Clasing contributed four goals and two assists, while Baricko added two markers, three helpers and caused two turnovers.

Jade Locklear netted a hat trick to pace Hood (4-6, MAC Commonwealth 0-1) in the losing effort. She also scooped up two ground balls and caused a turnover. Goaltender Lauren Crouch turned away five shots.

Widener (4-4, MAC Commonwealth 1-0) continues league action when it hosts Alvernia on Wednesday, Apr. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
