Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Conference Rival Alvernia

READING, Pa. (April 2, 2016) – The Widener baseball team was unable to capitalize off  of the season opening victory as they fell to Alvernia in the doubleheader on Saturday at Angelica Park.
 
The Crusaders earned a 7-1 decision in game one of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth contest, while game two ended with a 4-3 score.
 
The Pride drop to 12-9 and 6-3 in MAC Commonwealth action, while Alvernia improves to 13-11 and 7-2 in conference play.
 
In game one, Widener took an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Junior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) knocked in Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) as Barnett reached on a fielding error by the short stop.
 
Alvernia would tie the game up in the second inning as James Bertolotti hit home Chris Burns on an RBI single to third base. The Crusaders would add to their lead in the fourth inning as Bertolotti scored Cameron Coons on a single down the right field line. He would score on the fourth inning on a single by Mike Cunningham.
 
McDonoguh finished the game 1-for-2 on the game with a run scored. The junior's lone hit of the game was a double to left center. Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) added a hit for the Pride.
 
Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) received the lost on the mound as he allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, and fanned seven in over five innings of work.
 
Game two saw the Pride take a two run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Barnett once again was able to get the scoring started in the first inning as he hit home McDonough on an RBI double to left field.
 
Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) would add a run on the board for the Pride as he recorded a sacrifice fly to right field, knocking in freshman Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.).
 
Alvernia would score three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to take the season series.
 
DeBellis finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored, while Barnett recorded a 2-for-3 game with an RBI.
 
Widener will be back in action on Monday as they take on Wesley at 3:30 p.m. in Chester, Pa.
