Offense Drives Baseball in Rain-Shortened Game Over Conference Foe Alvernia

CHESTER, Pa. (April 1, 2016) – After falling behind early, the Widener baseball team went toe-for-toe with Alvernia as they defeated the Cruaders 10-6 in a rain shortened game on Friday afternoon.

The Pride improve to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play, while Alvernia falls to 11-11 overall and 5-2 in conference action.

Ben Dubas singled home a run through the right side in the top half of the first inning to give the Crusaders a one run advantage heading into the bottom of the first. Widener would answer right back by getting the first three runners on base safely with only one hit before Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) would knock in Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.).

The junior leftfielder grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.

Alvernia would tack on a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by Nathan Sides. The bats of the Pride lineup would wake up as Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) would record a two-out double down the right field line.

The junior catcher would score on the very next play as Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) would record an RBI single through the right side. The freshman would advance to second base on a stolen base. Elfreth would split the gap to score D'Alessandro on a double to left center.

Junior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.), who stole second on the very next play, would advance Elfreth to third on a bunt single towards third base. Barnett would knock both Elfreth and McDonough in on a single to right field, as Widener would take a 5-2 lead.

Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.), who earned his third victory on the hill with five innings of work, allowed two solo home runs in the top of the third. Cameron Coons led off the third with a solo to right center, while Ian Shaffer hit one out over the right field fence.

In the bottom of the third inning, Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) led off the inning with a home run over the left center field fence. The hit was the first collegiate home run for the sophomore first baseman. He would finish the game 1-for-3 from the plate.

The Pride would add four more runs in the sixth inning on five hits. Elfreth ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored, as all but one starter crossed the plate for the Blue and Gold.

Barnett finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored. Elfreth, Barnett, Seymour, Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) and Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) all recorded a double in the victory.

The game was called in the top of the seventh inning with one out due to lightning.

Widener and Alvernia will meet again tomorrow as they travel to close out the series in Reading, Pa. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
