Offense Lights Up For Baseball In Rout of Westminister

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 8, 2016) – The offense came alive as the Widener University baseball team defeated Westminster, 14-5, in Fort Pierce, Fla. on Tuesday.

The Pride, who opened up with six runs in the sixth inning, improve to 5-2, while the Titans fall to 0-3.

Widener started off the game with a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Junior Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.), knocked home designated hitter Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) on in RBI single. The lead would be short lived as Westminister would tie the game up in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Pride would tack on another run in the top of the third inning with Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.).

After two shutout innings from Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.), the titans would tie the game up at two apiece with sacrifice fly from Ryan Dunn in the bottom of the fifth. The very next inning, Widener took advantage of an error by second baseman Ty Ferlin, which allowed Enos to reach base.

A Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) sacrifice bunt would advance Enos, which would cause the Titans to make a pitching change. After two walks by the relief pitcher, Sam Hockenberry, freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) knocked home Enos on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Just a few batters later and after another pitching change, Healey made the Titans right-hander pay with a three-run home run over the left field fence. The homer capped off a six run sixth inning to give Widener a 8-2 advantage.

The Pride would add four more runs in the eighth inning to increase its lead to nine runs at 14-5. Healey finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored, four RBIs, and two walks.

Junior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. The right fielder notched a double and added a stolen base in the victory.

Davis earned the victory on the mound after allowing five runs, two of which were earned, in six innings of work. The righty fanned five and walked one in his third appearance on the hill.

Widener will be back in action tomorrow as they seek revenge against La Roche at 10:00 a.m. The Pride lost the Redhawks, 5-3, on Sunday in Fort Pierce, Fla.
