Baseball Drops Contest to La Roche

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 6, 2016) – The Widener baseball team fell to La Roche, 5-3, in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Pride fall to 4-2, while the Redhawks improve to 4-3.
 
Junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) knocked in freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) with a double to center field in the top half of the third inning. The freshman left fielder reached base with a single to right field.
 
He advanced to second base on an error by the right fielder Luis Navedo.
 
Widener added a second run in the top of the fourth inning when John Petrongolo hit in Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.). Barnett, who led the inning off with a single to left field, scored from third on the first baseman's single up the middle.
 
Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) added a run for the Pride in the fifth inning on a single from Elfreth. He started off the inning with a single up the middle. The shortstop would steal second base with D'Alessandro at the plate.
 
Elfreth finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs batted in. Petrongolo was 1-for-4 from the dish with one run batted in against the Redhawks.
 
Ben Herstine led La Roche with two hits. He finished with one run scored and a run batted in for the Redhawks.
 
Senior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) allowed three runs and four hits while striking out four in seven innings on the mound.
 
Widener will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Westminister (PA) at 10:00 a.m. in Fort Pierce, Fla.
