Powell Scores Five to Lead Women's Lacrosse in Season Opening Victory

CHESTER, Pa. (March 5, 2016) - Sophomore Kelsey Powell (Washington Township, N.J.) led the women's lacrosse team with five goals as the Pride defeated King's 17-9 in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener improves to 1-0, while the Monarchs fall to 2-1. Freshman Amanda Carroll opened the game with a goal for King's just 29 seconds into the game.

Powell answered just 13 seconds later to tie the game at one apiece. The sophomore cut through the lane as she received a pass from senior Morgan Scott (Cinnaminson, N.J.). Powell's goal would start off a barrage of five unanswered goals scored by the Blue and Gold in the first half.

Junior Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, Pa.) scored just minutes after Powell tied the game up to give Widener its first lead of the game. Powell, who assisted Clasing's goal, added two straight goals just 24 seconds apart from each other.

Scott would give the Pride a 5-1 advantage on an unassisted goal with 17:49 left in the first half. At half-time, Widener led 8-3 with two more goals from Clasing and a goal from senior Meghan Garvey (Avondale, Pa.). Scott recorded two assist in the game.

Powell finished the game with five goals on seven shots and two assist for seven points. The sophomore picked up two ground balls and two draw controls. Clasing added four goals and one ground ball.

Freshman Kaylee Horchak (Mullica Hill, N.J.) notched her first collegiate goal with 15:58 remaining in the game. The freshman added two goals, including one on a free-position opportunity, to finish the game with three goals.

Horchak's first goal was assisted by Garvey, while her third goal with 2:13 remaining in the game was assisted by Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, Pa.).

Junior Grace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.) recorded the victory with eight saves in net. The Monarchs were led by three goals from Carroll and three from Anastasia Araviakis.

The Pride outshot the Monarchs, 32-20, and picked up 28 ground balls in the victory. Widener finished with nine assist in the game with Powell and Scott finishing with two, while Brust, Garvey, Kelley Dreher (Glen Rock, Pa.), Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) and Kristi Rohrer (Seaville, N.J.) each added one.

Widener will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Misericordia at 3:00 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
